A Quick Overview of Key CAN Work Over the Past Years

William Commanda began his work to create a circle of all nations informally in 1967, with the first gathering of Indigenous Peoples from across North America that he organized with friends in Eganville, Ontario. It was the precedent for the historic late sixties and early seventies gatherings of Indigenous Peoples and others across Turtle Island, and especially in the mid west, where he himself went on several occassions.

1987 was the the year of the great global energetic convergence, and it was moment when the Indigenous voice was suddenly heard around the world, in documentaries, gatherings, writings and so on. It was also the moment when Grandfather Commanda first brought out the Sacred Wampum Belts during the Constitutional Debates on Aboriginal Issues in Canada. Therafter, his involvement in environmental, human, racial and political issues became more focussed, and his circle of followers and supporters began to grow. He saw the need to create circles of peace by outreach to all, and in the late nineties began to articulate these efforts more formally.

In May, 2000, he hosted the international Circle of All Nations Millennium Peace Gathering, and we worked to create a concrete identity for this global eco-community, unified by the embracing of his two fundamental values - respect and responsibity for Mother Earth and all her life-forms; and - racial harmony i.e. his unshakeable conviction that as children of Mother Earth, we all belong together, with Nature, irrespective of our individual colour, creed or culture.

He animated his beliefs by organizing annual gatherings at his lake side home every August, and his community of young and old supporters grew. He made outreach to individuals, organizations, governments, bureaucrats and politicians, tirelessly, and supported every activity and event he was invited to if he possibly could, no matter how humble or high profile, nationally and internationally. In this way, he influenced people at multiple levels unlike any other. The impact of his persistent efforts and his prayers are immeasurable - when honourably acknowledged, they serve to deepen and strengthen the work of people everywhere.

Over the course of the past dozen years, we developed the identity of the Circle of All Nations with Grandfather - we co-created the Circle of All Nations logo; we developed the information brochure that articulated the central focus of our work; we produced teeshirts to share our identity with people; we articulated the Millenium peace message and we produced books and developed our website to share Grandfather’s ideas. As well, several documentaries were produced to celebrate and share his teachings. Countless people were involved in these efforts, and together, we constitute the Circle of All Nations. If we want to, we belong here.

Our own work was entirely unfunded. Grandfather noted repeatedly that his people had never created artificial money. Their fundmental beliefs stressed the importance of generosity sharing, and the abhorance of greed or envy. In a decade beleagured by the global financial crisis, the Circle of All Nations strove to inculcate the belief that one could do much to teach, influence and serve without money. The national honour and esteem with which Grandfather Commanda’s death was ackowledged is testament to the many who supported his efforts in this way, and to them we all owe an incalcuable thanks.

There is much more to be shared about Grandfather Commanda’s life, work, vision, and inspiration, and this updated website will, with his guidance, serve as a virtual school of sharing of the wisdom of “The Kindergarten Dropout”, Doctor William Commanda, OC, for those who are interested.

As Grandfather was saying at the end, Megwetch, Megwetch, Megwetch, Megwetch!
